Cosy lairs

Image courtesy of [by Keerati] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

As we (humans) prefer nice bedrooms for sleeping, most animals also do. Here are some of those who got creative in making their cosy lairs. So, here are the superstars.

- Apes like chimpanzees , bonobos and orangutans are known to make nests in trees and have their good night's sleep. Although this may sound odd , but a skilled one can do it in minutes.

-  Now comes an exotic species of fish known for resting in its bag
i.e. the parrot fish which is known for making its sleeping tent by
inflating it through its mouth and resting in it.

- Not to forget, the chelonians ( tortoises, turtles and terrapins) have shells as their own cosy lairs . So, nothing to worry to find a safe lair.

- Also,  champion hibernators like hedgehogs , mice, rats etc. are known to rest by burrowing underground and hibernating. Even bear's caves are also cosy enough during the winter sleep (hibernation).

Fantastic fishies

Talking about the title, it tells us about the most unique features of some fishes which are truly amazing and have some specialties in their lives.

Image courtesy of [by africa] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

First of all, lets go with the exotic fishes and lets find the secrets of their lives.

* Parrot fish is known for creating its own lair by blowing a balloon like substance through its mouth and sleeping in it. What a specialty it has to shield itself from predators and many might think funnily that its on camping. So, happy camping.

* Next on the hit list, is the piranha from the Amazon river. Believe it or not, its uniqueness is in its way of eating and can finish off a sheep in minutes, of course as a team.

*  Third one, is the champion insect- catcher i.e. the archer fish of S.E. Asia known for squirting  liquid out of its mouth and shooting  insects and that too remaining underwater.

* Fourth is , the tripod fish which walks on sea bed by its fins . Surely, this species of fish is exceptional.

*  And now another exceptional among other fishes is, the flying fish which is definitely an aerofish known for flying with its fins. Yes, these were on the menu of Pi and Richard Parker.

* The last one on the list, is the mudskipper which is known for its small jumps as the name suggests.

So, I am expecting fantastic comments for this  blog.

Hunters of the sea.

This blog is on special request from my cute and sweet cousin sister who is 8 and lives in  USA. She wants me to write about sharks.

So, Nandika, in this above photograph, the biggest fish is the shark. They live in deeper oceans like Pacific ocean etc. They live on the ocean floor or in the middle part of the ocean  or even near the surface of the ocean.

Nandika, now get ready to know the secrets of their life -

-  Shark's eggs are hard and not soft unlike most of other fishes.

-  Sharks are also one of the fastest swimmers. They can swim at
around 77km/hr as fast as humans swim. So,don't think that you
can out swim a shark.

- Fishes normally have scales. But, sharks have cartilage bones in place of scales.

-  Curious to know the smelling sense of a shark, it can detect one drop of blood under water. So, don't ever think that sharks cannot smell one tiny thing inside the water. Their sense of smell is more accurate than us.

-  There isn't only one kind of fish called shark. There are more than 10 types of shark ranging from the bulky and giant
whale shark to small dwarf lantern shark.

-  Don't get afraid by hearing the name of shark. There are only a
few species of sharks which are dangerous to humans but not all
like the whale shark is actually harmless. But the only species
which you need to be aware are the great white shark, tiger shark,
blue shark, hammerhead shark, bull shark.

-  Some species of sharks actually leap out of water to catch their
prey like the great white shark. It sounds odd as its weight
is large , but it can easily do it when it is hungry.

-  This will definitely sound incredible to you as the great white shark not only prefers other kinds of fish but it also prefers to prey on other sharks and also whales and dolphins. This is too incredible as it has a large food menu list.

 -  You might be thinking that other fishes are a popular human food. But, sharks here are no exception. Every year, many sharks
are killed by humans for their food and also for their oils.

-  Is there any other animal that kills sharks? Your answer would be no, but here is the answer. There are many sharks who co- exist along side saltwater crocodiles. These hungry reptiles do feast on young ones of sharks if they get an opportunity. This situation is like a predator eating another predator.

So, give your feedback after reading it and  quickly reply.

Beware before you click!

Well, here I am not talking about computer's mouse click. I am talking about the sound made by an SLR camera. Now you all
might be wondering that what must be its connection with wildlife. Yes, I am exactly talking about the camera used by a wildlife photographer.

Just a few days back, I was reading about that profession andyeah, as you all might be knowing that it is also one of the most popular professions in the field of wildlife. And apart from that it can be a risky profession if proper precautions aren't taken. So, I am going to tell some necessary precautions required for this profession. Here we go-

Apart from being a trained photographer, he/she mustn't be
wearing  clothes with flashy colours. The clothes must match the colour of the green mother earth to get well camouflaged. Also, never put scent on your clothes which is sufficient enough for attracting many beasts.

Apart from being in a right place, right time and at right position,
getting a guide from an expert photographer is a yes, yes. As
photographing some herbivores animals, like, deers, horses, giraffes etc. is easy. Yes, even small non- venomous amphibians and reptiles can be easily photographed but by using safety measures. Even birds too. But the real challenge comes when you are photographing bulky herbivores like hippopotami  and elephants closely as they can become highly aggressive and can even injure or endanger your life.Yeah, this is also true when he/she is photographing other creatures like-

  • Wild cats and dogs.
  • Bears.(Especially brown bears, polar bears and even sun bears which can become grouchy and aggressive).
  • Hyenas.
  • Great apes like gorillas and orangutans.
  • Many reptiles( All crocodilians , lizards like Komodo dragon, and even various snakes) etc.

Even you all can take a look at the above photo of India's national beast. The photographer might have clicked it by using 'tips and
tricks'. Thus, such skills are required to become an amateur animal photographer.

Odd one outs

Well, you all must be knowing that all the members of the cat
family- be it big or small - are partially nocturnal hunters. But,
the odd one out or exception in this case is the cheetah which prefers to hunt during the day time i.e. it's a diurnal hunter.

Now in case of lifestyle and hunting, surely the " king of the

beasts" has its name in exception for three reasons.

Obviously, the lion is the most social among all the cats. It lives and hunts in groups (Other cats are solitary).

Secondly, The hairy part of the above beast is also being discussed which is found at the end of its tail i.e. the tuft, which isn't  found in any other cat.

It is also an exception in being sexually diamorphic among all the cats with male being taller, majestic and handsome.

Thank God!

Well, we all thank God almighty for those species which were on
the verge of extinction, but they are still present with us on this
planet in large numbers. So, each creature has its own recovery story.

1. The Alligator- Also known as gators in short, have a uniqueness of being the noisiest reptiles. They make lots of noises like bellows, hisses, coughs and roars. Along with that, they have the capability of surviving in colder climates than any other crocodilian. Once upon a time in the U.S.A., these croc siblings were hunted mercilessly for their skins for leather products. Habitat loss too was a trouble. It was an endangered specie at that time.

But, people were resilient for protecting these reptiles. Breeding centers were established and strict laws were made. From that point of time, the gators' numbers started rocketing.

Thus from that time onward, the American alligator became a
protected specie and its name was removed from rare creatures'
list. It's a fantastic thing that these apex predatory reptiles are still with us.

2. The Grey wolf- Simply called as wolf; people think they are ferocious and it also reminds people of the bad wolf from 'Little red riding hood'. But they are loyal and intelligent animals. Also, they are apex predators and also the largest species of dog family.

Image courtesy of James Barker / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

They are native to North America and Eurasia and homes are
colder habitats like Tundra and Taiga and their diet menu includes not only rabbits, hares, squirrels and other small rodents, but also heavy meats like bison, moose, elks (wapitis), wild boars and caribous.

They were extensively hunted for their soft fur and they were
also considered  nuisance to livestock (cattle). Their abodes (habitats) were also destroyed.

Later, people realized that these furry creatures are plummeting
in numbers and they were good enough to protect these furry creatures. Now, there are large populations of wolves found in North America, Europe and Russia where they are kept in different areas like, one, where they may have human conflict and the other, their real home.

This made the animal to come out of the rare creatures' list. But in some areas, some subspecies and species are still considered as endangered and critically rare, e.g. Indian wolf, Red wolf.

And, finally comes the most popular protected species of the history. And that is none other than...

3. The American bison ( Bison)- Of course, it is the largest and the bulkiest herbivore of the American Prairies, it has been hunted in the beginning of 1900's for their skins being used for leather and other products. Secondly, they were also considered as a delicacy for their meats. As millions of them were hunted, their dead bodies lied and foul smell used to come. Due to that, passengers travelling inside the trains had to shut their windows to avoid the smell enter.

That time, bison were nearly extinct. But thanks to the efforts
made by people like, establishing breeding centers, taking some
animals and increasing their numbers in private estates and making tougher laws. And as the last law was established, this beast was fully protected and their numbers rocketed  from 300's -500's and from 500's -1000's making the animal to disappear from the endangered list.

Along with that, other animals which disappeared from the endangered list are the trumpeter swan, rabbit- eared bandicoot,
raptors (birds of prey like golden eagle, bald eagle and many
vulture species of India and elsewhere), duck-billed platypus etc.

So after hearing these success stories, all of you and other people
will definitely get motivated for conserving wildlife. And let's
see and hope that these success stories should happen with tigers, rhinos, snow leopards and many other rare creatures.
